DIY X Leg Desk

As someone who works all day from a home office,  let alone someone who blogs about making beautiful spaces and things, the space in which I work is important to me.  Inspired by Jonathan Alder’s Channing Desk (left desk) with a high gloss top and modern chrome X legs I aimed to achieve the same look without the 50.00 price tag. My DIY version (right desk) cost 5.00, saving me 95.00!

DIY X LEG DESK

MATERIALS

  • Ikea Linnmon desk top in high gloss white (47 1/4 x 23 5/8 “)
  • X Desk Legs from LegShoppe on Etsy (28″ high in brushed steel)
  • 12 small screws
  • Measuring tape

To assemble the desk I flipped the Ikea table top upside down and lined up the legs on either end. For positioning I lined up the outer side of the legs with the two holes on the Ikea tabletop closest to the edge. After positioning both legs on the desktop I measured to make sure everything was equally spaced and using a screwdriver I used 7 small 1/2 inch screws to attach the legs to the desk top.
Once the legs are securely attached you can flip over the desk and it is ready to use. Here is what my beautiful finished desk looks like. Personally, I prefer my version to the Channing Desk, as the lack of metal bar connecting the bottom of the legs gives a cleaner more open finish.

I have to say a huge thank you to Lou at FuriousEndeavors for his amazing support, he was extremely helpful in giving suggestions on screw length and the height of the legs for my desk.

While I do love my X legs on a desk, I think they would also look pretty killer as a dining room table base, and I’m also eyeing his hairpin legs for a future console table.  Love my new desk? Leave a comment below to let me know. Likewise if you have any questions about how I built this desk, feel free to ask.

Disclosure: I was provided the desk legs from FuriousEndeavors for free, but all opinions are my own.
