Right now blueberries are in season, so it is time to enjoy some delicious local fruit. If you want to go blueberry picking in Ottawa, one fantastic spot is Canaan Blueberries. It’s at the east end of the city. At the vast farm, you’ll be able to pick your own blueberries. But you’ll want to go now, as blueberries are typically only available for a week or two.
Compared to strawberry or raspberry picking, blueberries are a breeze. They aren’t low to the ground like strawberries or have sharp thorns like raspberry plants. Instead, you can pick the berries standing up for the large bushes. Or if you want, Canaan Blueberries provides benches so you can comfortably harvest blueberries.
Honestly, each blueberry bush has so many fruits, you might need to move your bench once to fill up your basket. So bring a friend, and both of you can sit right next to each other.
What I love about picking blueberries is it is an easy summer activity where you end up with some delicious food! Honestly filling the two baskets took about 30 minutes to do, but you can go at your own pace.
There is no special technique to pick the fruit; all you need to do is pick off the large blue ones. The basket to collect them is provided for free, by Canaan Blueberries.
At Canaan Blueberries there is no admission fee, you pay at the end by the weight of the blueberries you harvest. I went and collected two giant baskets, and it was just $14! So now I have more than enough blueberries to freeze some for smoothies, make blueberry waffles, and a blueberry pie!
