The Dune of Pilat is located in the Arcachon Bay area 60 km from Bordeaux and is the tallest sand dune in Europe. The massive dune is 500 meters wide and 2.7 km in length, and around 110 meters above sea level. From the top, you can see a massive pine forest, the Arcachon Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean.
The view from the massive sand dune is amazing and I could have easily spent an entire afternoon here enjoying the beautiful outlooks while hiking across the dune.
For those who wish to visit the dune the easiest way is by renting a car as there is no direct public transportation. Yet the sight is not one to be missed. Despite all my travels this year, it is by far one of my favourite sights in the world because of the natural beauty. When visiting the dune if possible, I highly suggest visiting the information office and arranging to have a tour of the dune where you can learn about the local conservation efforts to learn how to preserve this wonder.
