Rejoice ice cream lovers, Ottawa has a new bubble waffle ice cream shop that is the perfect sweet spot in the Bymarket on hot summer days! Golden Bubbles celebrated its grand opening of the first flagship store in Ottawa. In the old location of My Sweet Tea, Golden Bubbles has partnered with My Sweet Tea to offer delicious drinks and bubble waffles – popular street food in Hong Kong!
Bubble waffles, also known as egg waffles are waffles with large bubbles so that the exterior is lightly crisp and the interior of the waffle is still soft and airy. At Golden Bubbles you can create your own custom bubble waffle picking between original, matcha, matcha, cappuccino, strawberry, and black and white waffles which range between $4-5. Next, you can fill your waffle with one scoop ($2.50) or two scoops ($4) of black sesame, coconut, green tea, or taro ice cream. Topping such as chocolate sauce, caramel, icing sugar and whip cream are all free, while other toppings such as red bean or fresh fruit cost between $1-2.

If you are looking for the ultimate bubble waffle experience, try one of the signature bubble waffles that cost $8.99. In celebration of Canada’s 150 Golden Bubbles currently has the “O Canada” which is a strawberry waffle, filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with strawberry puree and a maple leaf chocolate.
For the grand opening, I had the opportunity to sample all the bubble waffle flavors including one currently not on the menu, activate carbon which is a black waffle. My personal favorites were the matcha and black and white but all were delicious.
As someone who loves matcha, I was super excited to try the matcha red bean bubble waffle which is a matcha waffle, filled with green tea ice cream and topped with sweet red beans and whip cream. I couldn’t get over how huge the signature waffle was, so be warned go hungry to grab two spoons and split with a friend. The crispy waffle was the perfect contrast to the soft ice cream. The dessert was very refreshing on a hot summer day, without being overly sweet – I loved it!
