This summer after spending an evening at the Casino Lac Leamy I decided I wanted to learn how to play some of the games at the casino. As poker is the only game where you play against other players instead of the casino itself, I figured it was the game I wanted to learn how to play the most. So I signed up for an introduction poker lesson with GoXPR to learn all the basics of how to play the game.
The private poker lesson from GoXPR is great as you can schedule it with the teacher Eric to take place at a location convenient for you. For $50 you get a one hour lesson for 1-2 people where you will learn all the basics of Texas Holdem. For my lesson, I decided to take it with Hollie a local blogger in Ottawa and we both found Eric to be an outstanding teacher as he taught in a fun manner and was very patient.
At first, we went over the various hand strengths, such as that a royal flush would win against a full house.
After a bit of practice, we then progressed to learn about how the various stages of the game went including betting. Slowly we went through the various terms in the game, such as the flop, river, big blinds, etc.. and I finally felt ready to try playing the game.
To help keep things fun Eric challenged us to successfully answer a set of questions where he would place two sets of player hands down and we would have to tell him who won. For each correct answer we would earn a poker chip, and if I won enough chips we earned a prize.
After just one lesson I felt I had mastered the basics of Texas Holdem, but more importantly, I had a blast throughout my lesson. For those who already know the basics, Eric also provides one on one coaching at the casino where he will be your poker buddy for 2 hours.
If you are looking to learn poker, prep for your trip to Las Vegas, or simply are searching for a fun activity in Ottawa the introduction poker from GoXPR is worth trying!
