A Review Of Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria

I just had the pleasure of seeing Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria in Gatineau, and it was incredible! This year Cirque du Soleil is back under the big top, so make sure to go to see the show. I always prefer watching the shows under the classic circus tent. I find it just feels more fun. Plus as the tent is a smaller venue, every seat (even the ones in the back row) will give you a great view.

Alegria is one of Cirque du Soleil’s most internationally acclaimed shows, and it recently has been modernized. Throughout the entire show, I had a massive smile on my face, captivated with the joyful and dazzling performance.

The classic circus performance had all my favourite circus acts. Some of my favourites included the acrobatic who spun inside of two hoop wheels and the pair who did aerial straps (think The Greatest Showman but even better).

Another huge favourite of mine was the dazzling fire performer. He was so happy while performing that it was contagious. I still have no idea how he could do the tricks he did. At times he would move the fire from one stick to another using only his mouth, while at other moments he had burning sticks on his feet and he was fine.

Finally, I feel the two singers and musicians in this show need a huge shout out too! Especially the two vocalists that had such powerful voices, and created a beautiful soundtrack for Alegria.

Unlike some of the other shows, the story in Alegria wasn’t as clear. For example, Luzia is about the culture of Mexico and Volta follows Waz learning to accept himself. But Alegria doesn’t need the story to be the focal point to be beautiful. The tricks made the show brilliant. Plus there were so very cool special effects with the stage bursting into fire and “snow” raining down. This show is up there with Luzia as one of my favourites. So if you don’t have your tickets – get them now!

Alegria will be in Gatineau (Ottawa) from August 1 to September 1, 2019, before moving to Toronto on September 12 to December 1, 2019.
