Carcassone, France feels like stepping into a magical fairytale. The medieval city in southern France needs to be on your bucket list.
What To Do In Carcassone France
The ancient town in France is famous for its walled fortifications. When visiting, I admit I knew little about this spot aside from it was a city in France that happened to have a board game named after it.
Upon arriving, I was left speechless, as it is miracles that this UNESCO World Heritage site with a giant castle has remained to this day.
Explore The Medieval City
The city is very pedestrian-friendly, and you’ll find plenty of tourist shops, restaurants and the Château et Remparts to visit. There is a small fee to enter the castle, but you’ll be able to get an English audio guide to explain the rich history. From the top of the castle, you’ll also be able to enjoy a stunning lookout.
Comte Roger
When it is warmer, this restaurant is particularly lovely, as you can dine on the plant-filled patio. On the menu, you’ll find many traditional dishes, like the very hearty cassoulet.
This area of France is famous for cassoulet, and Comte Roger is known for one of the best spots to try it. It is a giant dish, that is impossible to finish to order one to split between multiple people as it is loaded with beans and sausage.
Another great choice is the chicken that comes with a tasty spelled risotto, parmesan, oyster mushrooms and a rosemary reduction
Comptoir de la Cite
For the best patio in the city, you need to visit the Comptoir de la Cite. From the spacious patio, you can enjoy a view of the walled city of Carcassone and the castle.
While here, make sure to enjoy wine tasting. Comptoir de la Cite offers free wine tastings of 3 different wines, but if you want to learn a bit more, they have a variety of other tours available starting at 5 €!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
La Barbacane
The Michelin-starred restaurant is within the Hôtel de la Cité and the fanciest restaurant in town. The main dining room looks straight out of Game Of Thrones with the tapestries hung from the ceilings and neo-Gothic architecture.
Here you can enjoy mouth water bite after the next by opting for their multi-course tasting menu, which is worth every dollar.
